A  battery charger is cheap. Making one up from a bell transformer and
diodes, is, well, not a good use of time and money. BUT, there are those who
find this entertaining. I wouldn't advise this to the
electrically-challenged, so those who are 'into' electrics will know what
parts to buy from Radio Shack or their local supplier (if any exist
anymore).
