The car is back together and this is what I learned.

The LM flexplate is dished (probably to compensate for the longer LM crank).

It needs to be installed so that the "bottom" of the dish faces the torque
converter.  If it is backwards it causes the problems in my original  post.

I am happier when everything  fits back together like it should.  Pulled the
flexplate and flipped it over, checked the bolts, they were correct for the
PG . . . left out the thick flywheel washer (I spaced it off and called it a
spacer in my original post) torqued the bolts and started buttoning
everything up.

Thanks to a step-by-step from Smitty the '64 leaf spring went in easily.
