If you are truly doing a rebuild...not just a repair....USE NEW!!

To test a lifter....put it in ATF....and pump with a  pushrod / phillips 
screwdriver....

until it gets Hard!  pull it out of oil...let set for a few hours....see if 
inner piston is still up solid...

if so..it's good...
