They made it with the vacuum advance, this indicates you should use it...
Make sure you haven't confused the spark port with the choke pulloff port
on the carburetor. Also having the carbs way out of balance can cause
this.
In addition to the advice of others I would add that watching the timing
(and the
action of the vacuum advance unit) while playing with the throttle can be
revealing.
