"Home brewing" is something you could probably get away with, but it is never a good idea. Generally everything is compatible, but the $ in motor oils goes into the additive package. Randomly blending different additive packages is probably not a good idea because the resultant witches brew may perform more poorly than either of the oils did in their own right. Again, you could probably get away with it, but it is bad practice. Excepting on-road emergencies, it's generally smartest to keep the oil in the engine of a single type. Unless you know the additive chemistry as well as the manufacturers, you are just making guesses.
