How can one test a starter on the bench with
a 12V power source to ensure that it is good before removing and swapping the
one in the car?
Grant,
Connect the starter to a good battery in the normal way. ie: positive lead
to the main
terminal on the solenoid and the other grounded to the frame. Jump a wire or
connect
a remote starter cable from the main terminal to the small terminal marked
"S" and the
starter gear should jump out into position and the started should spin. If
this happens
the starter is probably good. Be sure to hold the starter tight as it will
want to jump
or spin in opposite direction of the torque and could jump off of the table.
I always
install a new solenoid on a starter before installing a starter in a car
since solenoids are
relatively cheap and saves a lot of unnecessary labor.
