One of the main points of my post was to point out that you don't need a
soft, crushable washer, as long as all your mating surfaces are FLAT. I
get along just fine (for 10 years so far) with a hard copper washer
simply because I've machined it flat, along with the surfaces to which
it mates.
You also don't necessarily need COPPER, but it's just that copper is a
better conductor of electricity (as if it was that critical in this
case) than steel.
