I had a similar concern when I painted the dash on my '66.  I had the paint 
shop mix the color in a basecoat/clearcoat system but I never applied the 
clearcoat.  The base coat doesn't flow together like a single-stage system and it 
leaves a rough finish.  The dryer you put it on (opposite of a full-wet coat) 
the more rough the surface will be.  Don't get too carried away with the 
dryness though - the paint won't stick!
