Let me explain the difference in price:
The UPS store has mailboxes and they pack and ship stuff. That's all they
do. That's the only way they derive their profit. Profit to rent the
store, feed their families, etc. They charge for their service on top of
the shipping cost they get from UPS.
Your friend has a hardware store and charged you no profit on the shipping
because he's your friend. His profits are derived from the sale of
marked-up hardware. But I doubt he would charge all his customers $10.02
and do all their packing and shipping at no profit.
You could have packed the material yourself and dialed 1-800-PICK-UPS and
they would have come to your house and picked up the package. Or you could
go to www.UPS.com and schedule a pickup.
I know it's expensive to use the pack/mail services, because I once wanted
to ship 200 clocks to my customers. When I heard the price, I invested in
NetStamps.com and now I print my own postage on my home printer, pack
everything myself, and drop it off at the post office.
