<VV> towing a trailer

A buddy of mine routinely tows a small travel trailer in the 1000-1200 pound
range (unsure of tongue weight) with his '61 Lakewood (102/PG/3.89) using a
hitch that has 2 bolts through the bodywork into the structure and one into
the bumper, supposedly designed for Corvairs. He has gone cross-country
several times as well as shorter trips over the past few years, and has only
had 2 failures that could possibly be related to towing but were likely
age -- one wheel bearing and one tranny failure. The car rides well with it
but acceleration and hill-climbing ability suffers although he is usually
able to keep up. I believe the wagon springs are stiffer, so you may want
to upgrade the rears if you plan to do a lot of towing but his does fine on
the factory springs.
