Well,

After I fixed the pin on the float and put the cover back on the carb, I
took it out for a test drive.  After a little bit of initial misfiring
(carbon not yet burned off the plugs?) the car began to run like a champ!
It is running very strong now!

I took it on the freeway and its boosting very good as well.  Looks like it
was a fuel problem all along.
