Ladies and gentlemen:
Allow me to have my final say on the matter of valve adjustments.
Everyone else can do it the way they say works for them, and *I* will do it
the
way it works for me. I will not sit around and argue about this and that and
the other in order to defend the way I do things. I've had nothing but good
luck with hot adjust so that's the way I do it.
Why this is so hard for some people to understand escapes me. And yes, I
*do*
know the difference between simple wear and tear and advancing tolerances
in an
older engine and an actual defect which I'm "disguising" or "covering up" by
adjusting the way I do it. I *do* know how a Vair engine works and I am *not*
stupid in spite of the rumors and what my family says.
My '60 4-door has a couple of lifters which will NOT ADJUST CORRECTLY COLD,
DAMMIT!
I adjust them hot and running and they're quiet. This car has been running
like this for over TEN YEARS. If there was something genuinely wrong that I
was "covering up" I think it would have made itself evident by now. ya
think?
By the way, it's still quiet. It also has 190,000+ miles on it and NO I
haven't pulled a lifter out of it because they tend to stick/hang in the bores
(no doubt because of either a varnish ring or a slight lip on the edge of the
face) and I don't wanna scar up anything by arbitrarily removing sticky
lifters
just to look at the faces. It's been several years since I did the
adjustments and the car remains quiet. It runs well. I'm going to continue
to run it as-is until it exhibits a reason to fix something. And I *do*
watch
out for things to make sure I don't get greeted with any surprises. And
should the car (or any other Vair I have to work on) need a valve adjustment
because of seals or repairs etc I'll adjust them hot/running just as I've done
for the last 25+ years... and another 10+ years with other marques along the
way which also seemed to work out well with hot/running adjustments.
Anybody got a problem with that?
Ya know, maybe Hank is on to something with that retort thing of his...
