yesterday i took an 80 hp car engine apart out of a 65 van. it is/was a std
shift. someone attempted to use a repair shim on the crankshaft seal area. it
failed by burning the lips off the viton seal. two burned rubber rings on the
seal area. also had a welded early flywheel...was hitting on the nub in the
bottom of the bellhousing. also had a broken nose on the differential, and a
broken ear on the starter and severasl other issues. i will be busy this week..but
i was curious if anyone else has used those shims on the crank gears? i
usually pack the seal with vaseline or stp , so maybe that dry seal is why it
failed? it is early bellhousing on early crank so position was ok. i have some good
pictures of all these failures if anyone wants to see them. this is a job im
doing for a friend . i am replacing the engine with 164cu in. 95hp. so wasting
a very good looking set of 145 cu in cylinders , crank and lifters etc.. but
some headgaskets blown. regards,tim colson
