I haven't found the cause, at least not positively. For those who remember
and care about my initial report of about 10 days ago, I think what I
observed may have been caused by interference between the steering coupler
housing and a clamp on the overflow hose on the gas tank I installed SEVEN
years ago OR between the front of the right wheel well and the 195/70R14
tire I've been running in that position for well over a year (it's very
close, as anyone who has such a setup on an LM knows).
I removed my steering gear and, preparatory to opening it up, I cleaned
off the exterior thoroughly. But ultimately, my hand testing of the unit
disclosed such smooth, tight operation that I decided not to upset those
(possibly) 38-year-old load and lash adjustments. The lubricant inside
seemed nice and fresh, and the unit didn't have any leaks to speak of, so I
just added a little lubricant and put it right back where it came from.
Initial road tests suggest everything is just fine.
Page 9-1 of the 1966 Supplement shows the 1-1/8-inch hole I cut in the
splash guard and a lovely plastic plug filling the hole after the work.
Well, I made the hole and I did the work, but obviously, I don't have the
plug, and the Supplement is pretty quiet about where/how to get one. In our
vendors' catalogs, plugs are listed by application, not by size, and THIS
application isn't listed. So . . . anyone got any tips to offer on where/how
to find a plug?
