Todd....use Spraylube.......about a 5 second squirt...  or 1/2 oz...    crank 
engine over a few times before taking the new test...

PS....I think you have just a plain....simple......leaking 
valve.....sometimes called a "burnt valve"

When you get the head off...nothing appearant?....pour gas / solvent down the 
manifolds....look for liquid running out......will show a loose seat as well..

Go for it!  Remember 3 fingered blind midgets assembled these engines 
originally!
