I think it'd be fair to note that SOME kinds of testing can't be done on a
disassembled engine, and it can be very wise to do as much diagnosis/testing
on an engine with a mysterious problem while it is still assembled, before
tearing it down. The other side of this coin is that not every problem of
this kind becomes obvious just because you've taken the engine apart.
Evidence of SOME problems can even be obliterated by disassembly.
Zero compression in one cylinder (I had this recently - twice)? Just
take it apart. 60psi against 150 in all the others? Could be worth a bit of
investigation before disassembly, if only just to generate data to use in
the after-teardown inspection. That initial compression check is an
excellent case in point.
