[V8Vairs] using cables for 4 speed shifting

In a post I read here awhile back some one wrote about cables used for shifting the transmission instead of using steel tubing. Could I get that info about regarding where these cables could be found. My V8 corvair build is a 64 convertible and the shifting configuration is alittle unconventional than the late model version. any help would be great.
