I should add that the decision to use R&P has no basis in performance.  It
is just another way to connect a steering shaft to a steering arm.  The
value is that it is simple, the parts are protected from road grime and it
has fewer parts to wear.  To get these benefits in a Corvair, you must
modify the gas tank, steering shaft and cross member, while trying not to
introduce bump steer.  I can attest to its feasibility, but not sure its
worth it.
