Toby:
I think on my other Crown car, the cross member is right where yours is. I
had to replace the timing chain cover oil seal (was leaking, and the
conversion was 30+ years old). I had to hoist up the front of the engine, disconnect
the motor mounts, and slide out the subframe in order to get the harmonic
balancer off!

To increase legroom in my Crown car I moved the forward crossmember back
3 inches to within an inch of the front pulley. I also notched the left
rail to allow a low-mounted alternator. This will allow for a more
reclined seated position. With the sport bucket seats like Summit sells
(but $60 cheaper from CSK) it puts me in a comfortable position for both
legs and arms. I'm just under 6 feet tall.
If I ever need to remove the engine, I will probably have to tilt the
engine up to separate it from the tranny. Being a street car, I don't
anticipate much engine removal. The original Crown shift linkage will
be used.
