And why would you not want ported vacuum going to the distributor on a small block? The small block engine doesn't work any different than a regular Corvair engine, Or different than any engine that I know of and they all use ported vacuum for the distributor except for the turbo.
BTW, a backfire through the carb is a lean condition, usually.

Tony-
Check to see if the vacuum advance hose is hooked up to the vacuum port on
the driver's side of the carb. If it is hooked up to the pass side port you
loose the vacuum advance as soon as the throttle opens. The pass side port
is called "ported vaccum" which is not normally the one you want for a Chevy
engine.
