Thanks to everyone with the suggestions and experiences. Using a complete
frame seems like the easiest way to go. It makes hanging a rear end so much
simpler.
I suggest novices at this V-8 Vair experience buy an already completed car
unless you don't mind having a project sitting in your garage for a couple
of years and you are a talented fabricator. Starting from scratch is not as
easy as it seems. These days, the conversion parts can be ghastly expensive
to buy individually.
A C5 Corvair would be fun. Charlie Friend's open road racer was essentially
a C4 Corvair and it was incredibly fast. I guess a body-on-frame conversion
would be like a C1 Corvair.
