Hi Curt and everyone else,
I hope this note finds you well!
I had my Corvair delivered here -- it's sitting right outside. I even rented a covered space for it, although I'm thinking that it'll spend much of the winter indoors at the auto crafts shop on post. In the event I deploy, I'll most likely give it to a body man with the instructions: "here, fix."
I will actually be in Virginia between 5/28 and 6/10, but not close to DC. Much to A.J. "Airborne" Paluska's chagrin, I commence Air Assault training at Ft. Pickett, a VA National Guard base about an hour from Richmond. If you recall, I competed for and earned one of the coveted few Air Assault training slots offered by the JAG School. I'm pretty excited -- last week I got in some practice rappels here at Ft. Sill and, though I'm no nutso thrill seeker, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Nevertheless, Air Assault School is both physically and mentally intense -- the packing list alone makes me cringe. The experience will be grinding but, I think, ultimately rewarding.
Though I have a pal around my age eighty miles away in Oklahoma City -- another BMW Bavaria owner -- life here, so far, is a bit lonely. This isn't Washington, DC where every other person is worldly and educated. In fact, this isn't even Mayberry, where the folks may not be worldly but they're thoroughly decent. Like many military towns, Lawton is cesspool of vice and iniquity. I plan to spend my weekends in places like OKC, Dallas, Austin, and Tulsa (which is a really underrated city).
Here's something -- at a swapmeet I went to with my friend in OKC, I met the president of INCA. INCA, of course, is the Indian Nation Corvair Club, the CORSA chapter in and around OKC. I think they're like Group Corvair in that it's a coffee klatsch, but I'm glad I found them.
I enjoy my work. Lately I've been drafting wills for Soldiers about to deploy. Since so many Soldiers are rushing through the deployment office (by "office" I mean dilapated cinderblock hut), I can't spend a great amount of time refining my wills. Nevertheless, it's great to know I can help out someone. Like today. A Soldier made her sister the beneficiary of her Army life insurance money rather than her two young children because she feared that, in the event of her death, the insurance money would be stolen from her kids by her abusive soon-to-be ex-husband. I had her rework her insurance forms so the benefits would go to her kids. Then I created a life insurance trust into which the funds would be deposited. Simple stuff, but to a young specialist without much education it's like I worked some kind of black magic!
My biggest worries now are preparing for Air Assault School and fixing/selling my condo. A friend is renting from me, but she'll be moving out at the end of June. I want to be rid of the place so badly that I don't mind merely breaking even. If anyone is interested in earning extra money, let me know how you feel about installing hardwood floors. A new kitchen? Painting?
all my best,
daniel
