Members,

See below for a very nice drive laid out by the Bank Group Motor Club for
next week....may be worth considering for the Fall Tour.

Nice run down the Maryland side of the Potomac.

Dear All,

Ron Parker and I are planning the drive below for May 12 weather
permitting.
Please let me know whether you will be participating. I will then contact
you
with particulars about start time and meeting point.

Cheers,

Vincent

Outing: The Middle Potomac on the Maryland Side
Across America with Knife and Fork Tour

Get on Route I-395 N ramp by the Tidal Basin,
Take the I-295 S exit
Just before I-295 runs into I-95 there will be an exit to Route 210
direction
Indian Head
Stay on 210
Turn right on second junction with Old Fort Road
Turn Left on Fort Washington Rd.
Those interested in seeing the historic forts enter the Fort Washington
National
Park. (Pay fee). See lighthouse.
After leaving the park follow signs to marina. Have a drink in the marina.
Look south across the bay at the forest on the Maryland side about a
quarter of
a mile
away?this is where you want to go.

Make your way back to 210. Turn right.
Turn right at next intersection on Farmington Rd. Enter Piscataway Park
and
drive to River. You will be at a lovely cove with benches and shady trees.
We
will be directly opposite Mt. Vernon. This park was created so that the
view
from Mt. Vernon would not change from what it was in George Washington?s
times.
And vice versa. In season fishermen pull fish out of the water so fast it
is
hard to believe.
The rest of this park we will probably give a miss.
But?the park contains a colonial farm where they give ecology tours
And there is an old plantation house, Marshall Hall.

Go back to 210 and continue towards Indian Head.

First possible gourmet detour. Continue on 210 past the 225 turnoff till
you see
a little barbecue shack on the left. There will be cars parked on the
highway.
It has two picnic tables. This dirty little dump is the home of George?s,
the
best BBQ ribs in the Mid Atlantic states, and the fried shrimp are pretty
spectacular. But this is just an appetizer stop.

But to continue our tour.
Coming from Piscataway, take a left on 225, and a right on 224
Enter Smallwood Park and Art Center (Art Exhibit at riverside farm).
If we go to the Art Center through the Park main gate there is a fee. I
think
there is a small and barely marked Art Center turn off there is no fee.
There is
a gift shop. Sometimes the shows are interesting and sometimes not?they
feature
local artists and it is a mixed bag.

There are some nice driving roads from here. One way to go is to leave the
Park
go back the way on 224 and turn right on 225.
In Marshall Corner turn right on Rose Hill Rd.
Stop at Thomas Stone Historic Site on right. Continue in the same
direction
after leaving.
Historic Rose Hill Farm is pretty but actually private. Never stopped me.
Continue to ?T? in the road.
Turn Left then immediate right in about 50 feet then right at the stop
sign by
the one room Port Tobacco School
Continue on Chapel Point Road
Stop at Port Tobacco Court House
Nice view of Port Tobacco from Chapel Point State Park (no fee).

In Bel Afton turn right on 301
Turn right on Popes Creek Road.
Captain Billy?s on the water is famous for fried oysters.
Continue on Popes Creek Road to T junction
Turn right on Edge Hill Rd
Cross 301 and take 257 to 254 to Cobb Island.
Stop at Captain John?s and try the king crab legs
Walk around and take pictures
Cross the bridge and drive around the periphery of Cobb?s island, there
are only
a few good views, but worth it.
The bar on the far side of the bridge (not Shymanski?s) is famous for its
rockfish sandwich and burgers. A true dive.

Here we separate the sheep from the goats.

Sheep go back to 301 and head north for DC

Goats take 301 north only as far 234 and then turn right. Take 234 till it
ends.
Get on 5 S to 249. Till it ends. Really explore St Georges Island it is
small.
There is a skipjack and information center. Many docks are public acess
and
offer beautiful views. Visit the camping site at Merrylande. The light
house at
Piney Point (is a must). The beach on the way to Piney Point was where the
US
Presidents used to stay before Camp David. The bar at tall timbers looks
exceptionally interesting and the boats there worth photographing.

Trace your route back to 5. Turn right on 4. Stop and visit Solomons
Island.
Drive the periphery. Go into the museum, even if you don?t enter you can
photograph the lighthouse.

Route 4 is very fast back to DC from Solomons (about one and a quarter
hour).
