[FC] Fuel guage

I forgot, I have another one.

The old fuel guage on my 1961 Rampside does go up and down a little but when I fill it up to point it splashes out due to modern gas pumps, it reads ½.   Also it goes down slowly to a ¼ or so and that's it.  Is it a float in the gas tank (like on my 1962 Porsche) on a stick with a variable resistor or is it more modern than that?   Is it the guage itself according to someone's experience or is it a sending unit?   Thanks for the comments.
