It may be small consolation, but that "long cast iron rod" is bolted in
-- just a question of whether it can be unbolted, I guess. Likewise the
whole bloody front crossmember -- sometimes things seem simpler when
they are laying on the ground in front of one (like upper shock nuts).
Sorry about forgetting about the midwest -- of course, if one lives only
a couple hours (or less) from the Pacific Ocean, one does think that
anything the other side of the Mississippi is Back East, and Colorado is
in the middle of the West ...
Once you get it apart, it would seem a liberal application of anti-seize
may make it easier for the next disassembly. And, not all impacts are
created equal (of course, do you really want to twist off those bolt heads?)
