I believe the original question was whether or not the manual 'mystery 
shifter' could be converted to a cable linkage.

The answer is yes, of course it 'can', but ...

A cable shift conversion is easier to do with a side shifted trans, 
which in any Corvair is another whole project. The good cables this 
needs are not inexpensive, nor is building the hardware required at the 
shift lever.  But, it can be done!

Most folks learn to tighten up the weak points in the stock shifter, 
replacing bushings where necessary, and learn how to live with the 
'charms' of the mystery shifter -- it is part of FC Corvairing.  And it 
fits the image of the thrifty Corvair owner!
