[FC] front accelerator linkage

i have found that if everything is free , and you have the stronger 140
secondary springs in your carbs with a stock return spring in correct
position , no front spring is needed, unless maybe there is play in your linkages .
the areas that need attention on an early (61-63 ) style front linkage are
the shaft thru the floor washer, a thick felt washer that must be very free
to float around in the hole retainer, and the cable end under the shield.
i lube the washer and shaft with a spray silicone , or "fluid film" a rust
proofing spray of thinned cosmoline. I just fixed a nice 63
greenbrier last week by doing this. Also watch for the hole in the carpet
rubbing. best way to cut that hole in a new carpet , is with a 1 inch socket on
extension , heated with a torch. does a Quick neat job , and no loose
threads. push and twist quickly after heating it (not red hot)
At the same time , you might want to do a good check on all the linkage
in the rear for wear , and adjustment. Sometimes ( most of the time!) the
carb links to the cross shaft wear and have too much play to return properly.
Sometimes the holes in the cross shaft are worn .
The real trick here is to use only as much a spring strength as really
needed to return. too much is an aggravation on longer trips.

Could someone please explain where it should connect (somewhere on the
front body panel I presume) or maybe send a photo. I remember reading
somewhere recently that the front spring should be stronger than the rear spring
(on the carb linkage). Clarks lists a short and a long ("early '61"); can
anyone explain how to determine which one is correct on my '61 GB?
Thanks for any help.
Steve
