I just love peoples imaginations.
I have taken apart many a 50's and 60's cars and I have seen this "moleskin" in almost every window that rolls down. Some is just the right size and some is way to wide for the application and hangs out over the edges. I have seen "newer" installs when they were newer and this stuff is in no way a seal of any kind as it is trying to be portrayed. It may look like it now with age but the stuff only holds the window in the mounting channel. If it was used as a seal then every car of the 50's and 60's would have done the same thing.

Well, I just learned something new! I suppose Ive never seen one of those
things "whole" and never even imagined it extended outwards.

That bottom strip does more than maintain the grip on the window.
On the outboard side, when new, the strip provide a partial seal to keep water
out.
Not just any piece of rubber will do if you are going for an original look.

Those strips aren't seals at all, they are there to help the metal bracket
maintain its grip on the window glass. Take a piece of whats there to the local
glass shop. It is a common use item for other types of windows or even shower
doors where glass is inserted into metal and needs to stay there without
slipping or grinding.
