Did we ever get a conclusive answer on this?

My early (3665) '61 Rampside has the same piece.   The engine has been 
swapped 
for a 
'64 car engine, but pictures from '76, before this current engine,  show 
the same piece.  Looks the same as Anrew's picture, and looks to have 
original paint.   No 
trace of the car snout.   I was about to throw a FC crossover on when the 
engine goes back together from a rebuild, but this post got me curious.
