is this a stock generator?  external , or internal alternator?
if generator or stock (external regulator) alternator start by making sure  
of ALL grounds , including the regulator to body , battery to body then  
generator or head of motor. also you can run a very fine contact file on the  
regulator contacts, or just draw a piece of paper thru them while putting a  
little pressure on them , to remove oxidation. this also checks for  
pitting.  a folded piece of 400 wet or dry sandpaper works good for this  also.  
just dont go nuts taking too much material off contacts.
