Anecdotally, the VW vans with scoops seemed to do much better in the desert. 
I tend to think cooling is helped, because, the engine is normally most 
under load at speed. Any assistance to get more air available for cooling is 
a good thing. Be aware that some have found obstructions within the wall 
cavity and that WILL cause issues.
