Actually, there is a socket -- sockets, actually (two sizes) -- that 
fits that double-D flat.  You turn the shaft and hold the nut -- I like 
those speed nut like lock nuts as they will clean the threads when you 
take them off, if they haven't rusted away themselves, but yes, they are 
a b**** to get loose if you want to reuse them.

Also in the same category is accessing the alignment shims -- makes the 
shocks look easy -- btdt
