Ken... There is NO water (or extremely little) in the system since the silicone is non-hydroscopic, it does not attract water into the system. You said it yourself, "the water is not supposed to combine with the fluid". DOT 3, on the other hand - attracts water. That is the reason for the rubber boot under the cap - to help keep water (humidity?) out.
At the May CCE meeting, one of the members brought some test strips to test the MC. Everyone present (15, maybe 20 cars) tested their MC. The ones with DOT 5 (mine being one and the fluid being 4 years old) tested clear. Those with DOT 3 all showed at least some evidence of water (some more than others).

With the DOT 5, (silicone) the water is not supposed to combine with the fluid but then where does the water go that gets in the system? It still lays in the lines and the cylinders and is still capable of rusting. So, what do you get for using the silicone fluid? Sort of spongy feeling brakes. Why? Because the silicone is a compressible fluid.
