[FC] <VV> Carburetor Heat System

I've had the deflector plates on mine in every sort of weather and 
loading.  If they impair cooling, I've never observed it.  I mounted my 
electronic ignition to the one on the passenger side so that it would 
get plentiful cooling from the air in the duct.

Likewise, I've never had carb icing in the van.  By comparison, my '65 
coupe got it regularly in fall in NC until I restricted airflow into the 
compartment...

I can't regard the baffles as a bad thing - I'm sure that GM engineering 
sized the restricted openings sufficient to deal with the airflow demand 
of the engine.  Certainly the duct area is much larger than an Ultra 
Van's whose engine works a lot harder than most FCs.
