I know there have been a few people use a gas strut for the lid. The engineering isn't that hard to make a gas strut hold closed and open when the lid is open. You will have to hinge the forward side.

Subject: [FC] Engine Cover Support for Greenbrier
In the process of restoring our 65 Greenbrier, I would like to put a
Corvair car engine lid support on the heavy and awkward engine cover. The
Corvair car engine lid support that I have extends to about 17 1/2 inches. Is
this the same for all supports. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks. Charlie
