My first thought is the same as Dennis's.

I don't know about "shortened", but the brake pedal does need some (AT 
LEAST A LITTLE BIT) of freeplay, clearance, between the pedal and the 
master.  A failure to maintain that clearance will result in pressure 
building in the system. It is not like an fc clutch, where you gotta get 
all the freeplay out for a clean release. 

Sounds like with all that was replaced, it should be working, and the 
single mc's are not a complex device.
