The original post said that the pedal got hard, not soft, after
driving. Therefore the check that you suggested will do no good except
show a good master cyl. if there is a dual master cylinder, as I see it.
It was also said that the brake adjusters were backed all the way
off, but were the linings still rubbing the drums? If so then the
linings are swelling with heat and with no movement in the shoes the
pedal will feel rock hard with no free play at all. The one thing you
didn't say is if you have a dual master cylinder. Also after driving
the 20 or so miles does the FC still stop OK other than the wheel
locking? Did you rebuild the master cylinder?

Go down to your local auto parts store, and purchase a brass plug that
screws into the master cylinder where the brake line goes. Then try
the
pedal. It should be rock hard. If it isn't, then it is the master
cylinder
bypassing internally. If it is rock hard, then disconnect the rear
line
from the block, and try that half of the system. If everything is
good,
then disconect the front half and try the brakes in the rear. You
should be
able to find the problem using this method. My personal guess is that
the
linings are too far away from the drum face and need to be adjusted. .
