And on the same note, they didn't want rattles either for customer complaints. That costs more money than the wavy washer. The cost isn't the whole picture here. Yes, they would have saved a 1/10th of a cent but the resulting customer complaints would have out weighed the cost savings in the customer service department.

If it were not a neccessary part, then GM would have eliminated it many years
ago. My 1978 Cadillac uses the same part, and that is 14 years later. We all
know that GM would save a penny if they could, because at the end of the year,
that penny multiplied by the number of cars would add up to substantial dollars
in parts and labor saved. If they put it there, it is for a reason. I would
put it back, and I wouldn't want any mechanic working on my car that tosses
parts because he thinks it isn't neccessary. Your car, your choice, your
brakes...

Thanks to everyone for their inputs on my recent brake questions. After
talking to several mechanics, I was told that they normally just toss
the wave washer, this makes it easier to get the clip on, I decided to
try it and see what happens. The only purpose that it serves is to take
up tolerance between the arm and web of the shoe. I managed to find
some time on Sunday and got the rear brakes installed on the rampy. Now
I just need to get the front brakes on, bleed the system (all new
lines), and lube the front e-brake cable.
Anybody have any words of wisdom on lubing the front cable? Best way to
clean and lube, etc..
