[FC] idle/engine

it may be just a coincedence...make sure the slide under the front of the van 
where the pedal shaft hooks onto the cable is very free and lubed, sometimes 
cooking oil like "pam" in a spray can works very well on this unit.  the smell 
i agree may be oil leaks or at worst a head gasket starting to go. make sure 
they got the cable in the right place around the motor mount area and no 
kinks.  maybe unhook it and see how free it is?    also is crossrod free?  
sometimes they get bent and bind on the end supports.  try resyncing linkages.
