John,
I had the same result when the pinion seal was inadvertantly left out, only with much more disasterous results. Be sure the seal is in the correct orientation. The service manuals show it put in both ways - what looks correct, and what looks backwards. Based on the seal cross-section I put mine in "backwards" as it seems. This assumes higher pressure on the PG side will help close the seal tighter on the shaft. No leaks past the seal after several thousand miles, and no belief that it will leak.
