I don't advocate this for everyone but I did it for several years. I am
also a very defensive driver and I know how to read traffic several cars in
front of me and the road ahead to drive accordingly.
That being said, I towed a trailer all over the Eastern part of the US,
mountains included, with our 63 panel van. All I had was the brakes on the
van! No trailer brakes. The trailer and parts that we pulled probably weighed
in at the 2000 pound mark and then there was the extra weight in the van that
was a semi-camper conversion. So all together we were about 5000 pounds going
down the road with just the 11"X 2" brake shoes on the van.
Like I said earlier, that is not for everyone, nor do I recommend doing
it even though I did.
