[FC] Steering woes

Your friend makes a comment worth considering. I made the suggestion to go to
the metric thread, because that is what I did in a similar situation. As long
as there is a nut on there, that is all you need to be concerned with. It
doesn't matter what thread you use. As for the squeak, I suggest that you
start looking elsewhere, because I don't see how the wheel being loose could
cause this. What condition is the upper steering shaft bearing? While you
are in there, I suggest that you clean and lubricate everything. There isn't
much to the top of the column that will take very long. Make sure that the
directional switch housing isn't too high. This is adjustable from the
outside of the column by loosening the locking screw at the base of the
housing. This is usually adjusted after the steering wheel if set into its
secure position... Paul in CT..

Subject: [FC] Steering woes
I haven't fixed the stripped end on my steering
shaft yet. It was suggested that I re-tap the stripped
1/2-13 shaft end with the next smaller metric tap. I
was getting ready to do that when a machinist at work
told me I'd have trouble with that because of the
large difference in the thread pitch. He's
recommending that I go with a 7/16-14 thread to keep
the pitch close. Any thoughts?
In addition, after removing and replacing the
steering wheel with the stripped nut, so I know it's
nowhere near as tight as it should be, I now get a
terrible rubber squealing noise whenever I turn the
wheel to the right. No noise when I return the wheel
to center, or turn it to the left. Could this be
caused by the loose steering wheel nut, or do I need
to look elsewhere?
Thanks,
Tim McCann
