With approximately 1/3 of the gasoline consumed already ending up as waste
heat, burning additional gasoline to keep the occupants warm just can't be
more efficient.

The gas heater might be cleaner, heat up faster, and be of  greater capacity
than the direct air heater.  Might even be more comfortable, but having to
drive with the heat on minimum and the windows open implies maybe it's too
much.

Steve also in CT.  It doesn't often get THAT cold here.
