Paul,
I went to Denver last month to the Rocky Mountain CORSA meeting,
specifically because Steve Goodman was giving a tech talk on early rear
wheel bearings. He said the worst thing you could do was to install a
Green bearing and it would only last a short time. His recommendations
were to find a NOS bearing (will need to be disassembled and re greased) ,
get a rebuild NOS style bearing, get one of the bearings Clark's is selling
and replace the grease before using (doesn't apply to FCs). At the time
Steve had a set of NOS bearing on order for his Spyder because even with
regular maintenance they were wearing out at 350,000 miles. Steve doesn't
have a stock of bearings to sell, he is happy to locate NOS bearings or
rebuilt bearings and install them for you so he is not recommending the NOS
or rebuild over the Green because he has a lot of higher priced bearing to
sell.
I don't speak for Steve, but this was my interpretation of his tech talk.
By the way an early Corvair rear bearing is neither a ball bearing or a
roller bearing, but is a barrel bearing.
I was so happy with the tech talk, I joined the club.
