Thanks. I do like the car, and I would like to save it, but there is a
limit. Lionel seemed to think it was "not bad" when I got him to adjust my
valves. After my son and I rebuilt the engine, I just couldn't get the
valves adjusted right and needed Lionel's pro experience. I suppose if they
cut into it and find too big of a mess that I could just give up and use it
as a parts car. I probably won't be out but a few hundred bucks at that
point (plus the new outer rockers from Clarks if they won't take them back).
I'm going to do some soul searching about this, and take a long look at the
car, and then I'll probably call you to talk about it. Thanks for the
offer.

I can understand not wanting to shell out money for another car. I can tell
you that if you have holes showing in the rockers, the inside section of the
rocker will be rotted as well. At the very least, you can replace the
outside rockers (the cover section) and leave the inside if you clean it up
and coat it with a good rust proofing paint. The biggest problem is that
the Corvair convertible is built on the rockers as they are much heavier
gauge than a coupe. The shop who did mine, had to bend metal on an English
wheel and make the inside door jamb section that welds inside the top of the
front fender and runs to the center of the rocker panel. Even though it
can not bee seen, it is there for support. He was able to do that on both
sides, however the right way is to remove the front fenders. He cut them
off at the bottom and was able to section the pieces.
The fenders are then welded back on. I purchased the inside rockers from
the Corvair Ranch in PA. The outers were from Clarks' although I purchased
mine from another guy who had them in storage. When I asked the body shop
just to do the outside sections, he told me there was not enough metal
inside to weld them on, that is why he replaced them.
If you car is good, and you like it......there is nothing wrong with saving
it. My shop did me a favor, he does not work on old cars for customers. If
you want some more tips, give me a call.
