Hi-
John Weigel is exactly right. I'ts always cheaper to buy a perfect body than to repair a bad one. My brother got his car for free so, spending money on the body was ok. I personally have always believed that the better the car you start out with, the better the car will be when completed. If you start out with a bad car (body-wise) it is nearly impossible to create a perfect car.
If a convertible is not a must, that makes things easier. Because of their construction, the convertible bodies tend to have very rusty rocker panels. Coupes have a lot less structural problems, even when they do have rust. If you go looking for a body don't forget that in addition to eBay, craigslist, and corsa, you can keep scanning the hemmings website that has on-line ads and Clark's website also has ads for cars.

My 2 cents...
Unless you are doing it yourself, body work probably is the most expensive thing about restoring a car. And it essentailly an initial minimum fixed cost, i.e. you're going to invest at least $xxx, whether the car is a Yugo or a GTO. My approach is to buy the most solid body with the best paint condition you can afford, and fix up or transfer in the mechanical stuff. Considering how many good Corvairs are still in hot dry places, investment-wise, I don't see how it's worth it to fix major rust, unless you have your own compelling personal reasons. Please, I'm not knocking anyone here - I'm only speaking from a purely objective, money viewpoint.
Call someone in one of the chapters in the southwest and ask them about Corvairs that might be available in their area. If you talk to a chapter officer, I would hope that you'll get an honest opinion. I've bought one car from Texas and one from New Mexico from Corsa members. I don't know if my experience was typical, but after talking to the sellers on the phone and getting some pictures, I felt comfortable that they were square deals (and they were). Expect cross country shipping to run ~$1K and you'll get a feel for how much you'll have to pay.
I'd be happy to chat on the phone if you want more details.

$3K. Wow, I had no idea it was so expensive. The only thing my car has that I care about keeping is the 140 engine that my son and I rebuilt a couple years ago. I bought my current body to put the engine in. Maybe getting a rust free body is cheaper than replacing the rockers and whatever other body work it needs? What I have now is a great parts car though. Anybody have any experience finding a rust free body in the southwest? It would be nice if I could get one without making a trip to examine it.
/John

Hi John-
I would be more than happy to go over the job with you. As Brother Dave says.......this is big job to have done. You are more than welcome to give me a call at 508-676-2724 and I can discuss this in detail as I saw the entire thing done and have all the pictures,
Steve

John -
My brother Steve just had his replaced. And my Dad had his replaced two years ago. As you may already be aware, rocker replacement is very expensive to do. It will probably run $3K to do it. Unfortunately, the only way to find a rust free convertible body is to have it shipped here from the southwest. You should email my brother Steve about it. He even has photos of his car being done. I CC'd him on his email.

Hi guys,
I have been looking around to see if I could fine a better body than the one I have on my 66 convertible. I have decided mine isn't all that bad. But I definitely need someone more skilled than I to cut out the old rockers and replace them. Does anyone have any recommendations? I live in Framingham. Due to budget cuts, everyone at my company got downsized on Fridays for the summer which gives my son and I time to work on the Corvair. I would like to get the major issue fixed so we are left with the stuff we can bite off in my garage.
/John
