Hi all,

I went to the cruise night last night in Millis and they handed out flyers for a new cruise night in Foxboro put on by the Mass Cruisers. It is at the Bass Pro Shop, at Patriots Place every other Thursday night. The dates are 5/22, 6/5, 6/19, 7/17, 7/31, 8/14, 8/28, 9/11, 9/25, 10/9, 10/23. 5:30 rain or shine. There is a 50/50 raffle, and prizes. Food & beverages are available in the Bass Pro Shops' Blue Fin Lounge. There will also be a DJ, Ron Allsop there. I am going to check it out this week. If you haven't been to the Bass Pro Shop at Patriots Place yet, you should go and check it out. The place is really neat.

For more information, their website is www.masscruisers.com. I will bring the flyer to the next meeting.

Also, they are putting on their 17th annual show on August 17 at the Medway VFW. I will bring that flyer also.

Thanks guys, I guess I need to make an appointment with Steve to get this overheating problem figured out. It only overheats when I am on the highway going over 45 or 50 mph for an extended amount of time, 10 or 15 minutes. Otherwise as long as I keep it under 40 it doesn't happen.

Thanks again, See you all next wed. at the Tavern.

Not confusing Pete.
If you remove the plate (which is what was intended for winter), then heat rises from the engine and warms the oil cooler (radiator as you say) quicker than with the plate in place. The car will achieve optimum operating temp quicker in those cold winter months.

Cynthia. No, this should not make your car overheat. What would make it overheat is blocked passages in your oil cooler. The cooler is designed to allow oil from the engine to flow through it and there are tiny air holes or vents that allow air to flow though to cool the oil passing through the cooler. 'Hot' spark plugs could also cause overheating. Excessive gaps in the engine seal (around the perimeter of the engine) could contribute to ineffective cooling. A rag or debris sitting on top of the cylinders underneath the top shroud (or turkey baster as it is sometimes referred to) preventing cooloing air from flowing through the engine compartment properly...the list goes on as far as causes.

The much talked about "plate" is located to the left of oil filter,or directly under the filter,if A/C equippted.Attop the plate is direction's for summer or winter operation. The plate cover's the corvair's "radiator".Why i call it the radiator, anything that has a liquid [oil] flowing through it,to be cooled, is a radiator that disapate's heat, aka oil cooler. This will allow one to say, that the corvair has a radiator.Conventional vehicle have radiator's, and not known as coolant cooler's.O.K. Pete, let's not get technical, adding to the confusion. Pete Cuipenski, Fanning Spring's, Fl.

Cynthia,

Since I started this I thought I would reply even though you sent it to Steve. I've since found out that early's also have the plate..

If you have a 2007-2012 Clark's catalogue, look at the bottom of page 104 for their info on the plates/cover.

I have to believe if it was not removed for the summer it would make the engine run hotter, but I;m not a tech person, just a wanabe.

Steve,

What do I look for on my car? for this plate? Is that something that would make my car overheat on the highway in the summer?

Steve,

I have the plate so I'm all set. Do all models have it or just the lates?

I checked my crossmember and the only bad section is where the passengers strut rod attaches and I've cut a plate for that area.

Since I'm now in the process of installing new upper and lower A arm bushings along with adjusting bolts I don't think I'd be interested in replacing the one on the car. Currently I have the passengers side completely done and the drivers upper is off being painted prior to being reinstalled. Only the lower drivers side is left to do. New upper ball joints, outer tie rod ends and sway bar bushings also have been replaced. Shocks only have less than 1000 miles on them. Also have done the front brakes over. So you can understand me not wishing to change my current crossmember.

If I was interested in having a "spare", how much would you want for one? What would it come with?

Have a great weekend.

Jim B

Hi Jim,
Many people discarded them over the years. There function is to help control air flow and more specifically temperature of the engine during warm up and operation. It is supposed to be installed - covering the hole - during summer operation. I'm sure I have extras if your interested. I also have two late model crossmembers I'd like to part with. They are taking up too much room and I'd like to see them go. Let me know if your interested.

Club Members,

Just a reminder to change over the winter/summer plate in the engine compartment. Some people may know it as a summer/winter plate. While changing my oil & filter I noticed that I hadn't done mine.

Unable to attend this weekend RI event, sorry.

Jim B
