Hi Rick,
Just take a golf tee or a machine screw and put it into the end of the
modulator vacuum line. This will troubleshoot your idling problem if the
modulator is the cause.
Shifting will be a bit rough if you drive it, but you will see if the
modulator is the problem.
Usually if they leak, they pull trans fluid into the engine making it smoke
like crazy.
